10 Questions to Ask When Researching Cornwall Wedding Venues

Choosing the right wedding venue in Cornwall is one of the most exciting (and sometimes overwhelming) parts of planning your big day. From clifftop sea views to cosy barns tucked away in the countryside, Cornwall has no shortage of incredible locations. Hopefully this list has helped to pin point what you’re after. But before you fall in love with the scenery, it’s worth asking a few key questions to make sure the venue fits your plans, your guests, and your photography perfectly.

As a wedding photographer who’s spent over a decade capturing weddings across Devon and Cornwall, here are the 10 most important things to consider when visiting wedding venues in Cornwall:

1. Setting & Scenery

Cornwall is full of variety with beaches, moorland, gardens, and coastal cliffs. Think about the kind of backdrop that suits your personalities and wedding style. Ask where the best photo spots are and how the light changes throughout the day. A beautiful setting can elevate your photos, but practical access and good natural light are just as important.

2. Ceremony Options

Check if you can have your ceremony and reception in the same place, it saves travel time and keeps the day relaxed. If you’re dreaming of an outdoor ceremony, find out whether the venue has a wet weather backup. Some venues are licensed for civil ceremonies, while others allow more flexibility with celebrants.

3. Logistics & Accessibility

Cornish lanes and rural settings can be stunning, but tricky for guests to reach. Ask about parking, transport links, and accessibility for elderly or disabled guests. Venues with accommodation or nearby hotels can make the weekend smoother for everyone.

4. Guest Experience

It’s easy to focus on the visuals, but comfort matters too. Find out how many guests the venue can host comfortably, whether heating or air conditioning is available and what time the evening ends. A happy, comfortable crowd always makes for better photos and a more enjoyable day.

5. Catering & Suppliers

Many venues have preferred suppliers, but it’s worth asking how flexible they are if you’d like to bring your own caterer, florist, or photographer. Check whether there’s a kitchen on site, if external caterers are allowed, and what options are available for more relaxed dining like sharing boards or food trucks.

6. Lighting & Timings (for Photos)

Lighting plays a huge part in how your photos look. Ask when and where the best light falls during the ceremony and reception. Is there a spot for golden hour portraits? Are there shaded areas for harsh midday sun or indoor options if the weather turns?

7. Accommodation & Weekend Packages

Some Cornwall wedding venues offer weekend packages where you can stay on site the night before and after the wedding. This can make the experience feel more like a celebration than a single day. Ask how many guests can stay overnight, what’s included, and if breakfast or brunch is available the next morning.

8. Style & Flexibility

Does the venue match your vision, or is it a blank canvas you can make your own? Find out if you can use candles, sparklers, confetti and whether you can bring in your own styling elements. The more flexible the space, the easier it is to make your wedding feel uniquely “you.”

9. Weather Contingency

Cornish weather can be unpredictable, so it’s worth asking what the wet weather plan looks like. Is there an indoor space that still feels special? Is there cover for outdoor drinks or group photos? Venues that think ahead here can make a huge difference to your experience.

10. Budget Transparency

Finally, make sure you know exactly what’s included. Some venues include tables, linens, and staff in their hire fee, while others charge separately. Ask about corkage, clean-up fees, or late-night charges and always check the payment schedule so there are no surprises later.

Final Thoughts

Choosing your Cornwall wedding venue is about finding a space that feels like “you.” Whether it’s a coastal celebration, a rustic barn, or an elegant manor, the right venue should reflect your personalities, fit your plans, and make your guests feel at home. If you’re still exploring ideas, take a look through my recent Cornwall weddings for inspiration, each one shows just how different and personal these venues can look through the lens.
