5 Questions to Ask When Visiting Devon Wedding Venues

Choosing the right wedding venue in Devon is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make while planning your day. Devon has it all – rolling countryside, coastal views, rustic barns, country houses, and elegant estates, so narrowing down the options can be tricky. The best way to find your perfect venue is to visit a few in person and ask the right questions to see how well each fits your plans. Here are the 5 questions to ask when you visit Devon wedding venues:

1. What’s the Guest Experience Like?

A venue might look stunning, but how will it feel for your guests? Ask where guests will spend downtime between ceremony and dinner, whether there’s cover in case of rain, and how late the bar and music can run. Small comforts make a big difference — especially for evening photos when everyone’s relaxed.

2. What Are the Rules Around Suppliers?

Some Devon wedding venues have their own recommended supplier lists – florists, caterers, stylists, photographers. These can be great for reliability, but check how flexible they are if you already have suppliers you love. Ask whether there’s a corkage fee, and if outside catering is allowed.

1. What’s the Setting Really Like?

Devon’s variety is one of its biggest strengths — coastal views in the south, rugged moorland to the north, and endless countryside in between. Think about whether you’d prefer a coastal breeze, a rural escape, or a timeless country manor. Ask about access to photo locations on site and whether there are views or gardens that make for perfect backdrops.

2. Can We Hold Our Ceremony and Reception in the Same Place?

Venues that offer both can save time and keep the day flowing naturally. Many Devon venues have licensed ceremony areas, both indoors and outdoors. If you’re hoping for an outdoor ceremony, ask about their contingency plan. Devon’s weather can be unpredictable, even in summer.

3. What’s Included in the Price?

An obvious one, I know, but it pays to be clear from the outset. Venue packages vary widely. Check what’s included in the hire fee – furniture, linens, setup, staffing, corkage, clean-up, and bar service. Ask if there are any hidden extras or seasonal discounts. A transparent quote from the start helps you budget confidently.

4. How Easy Is It for Guests to Get Here?

Some of the most beautiful venues are tucked down narrow lanes or miles from main roads. Ask about parking, taxi access, and nearby accommodation. If you have guests travelling from afar, venues near Exeter, Totnes, or Barnstaple tend to have better transport links.

5. How Flexible Is the Space?

Whether you want a relaxed outdoor feel or a more elegant setup, flexibility matters. Ask what decorations are allowed — can you use candles, fairy lights, confetti, or fireworks? The best venues work with your ideas rather than limiting them.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to wedding venues in Devon, the right one should feel like an extension of your personalities – relaxed, beautiful, and welcoming. Whether you choose a country barn, a coastal estate, or a luxury manor, take the time to ask questions, explore, and imagine how your day would unfold there.
